Chapter 15

Flash Memory

Tonya grinned broadly. The guy from Telecommunications had come with exciting news. After years with the clunky old company-issued cellphone, her manager Carl had authorized an upgrade. And not just a minor upgrade, she was getting the coveted iPhone. Tonya was several months away from eligibility for a new phone; so the news was a bit of a surprise. But then, she and Carl really liked surprising each other.

Instead of a box adorned with the white Apple logo, the Telecomms guy delivered a message that it would be two or three days before she would have the 4.8 ounces of gleaming black wizardry in her hand. “The Brick,” he called her old phone, laughing at the worn-out joke, would have to be taken back to the lab (his cubicle, no doubt). There he would apply some kind of sorcery to transfer her contacts and any other info to the “new instrument.”

“No worries,” she said. “Couple of days without the electronic ball and chain might actually be kind of nice.”

Two days passed, and Tonya got a call from her boss inviting her to come to his office. “Cute,” she thought. “Carl wants to give me the phone himself.” In her excitement, she failed to notice there was none of his usual flirtatious banter.

Tonya stepped into the office, obviously not expecting to see the HR guy sitting next to her boss Carl. I’m not a bad person, honest. But most employees knew that meeting with me was the adult equivalent of being sent to the vice-principal’s office.

I closed the door and invited Tonya to sit, then held up the Brick and asked, “Is this you?”

“It’s not me, it’s my old phone.” She giggled nervously at her own undeniable wit.

I slid it across the table. “Cute. But I’m literally asking if that . . .” I pointed to the phone’s screen. “. . . is you.”

Tonya took a closer look and swallowed hard. “Ohhh . . . nooo!” Even on the low-res screen, the image was unmistakable—Tonya, naked from the waist up. The woman was forty-five-ish and more than a few “ell bees” over the limit. The photo was actually not that titillating, so to speak.

“I’m sure you’re aware that company policy prohibits this kind of thing on our computers and phones, Tonya.”

“Yeah, of course,” she replied without meeting my gaze. “Sorry. It was stupid of me—not to delete the picture.”

I saw her steal a quick glance at Carl. He stared intently at the desktop, face as grey as December dusk.

“It’s not just that you didn’t delete it,” I said. then placed a second phone on the table in front of Tonya, the same embarrassing image on its screen. “You emailed it . . . to your boss.” Without looking up, Carl let out an involuntary little groan.

The office was silent for a minute or so. “I admit it. It’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever done,” she blurted. “But Carl didn’t ask me to send him the picture.”
